The Serra de Monchique in the Municipality of Monchique, Faro District, in the western Algarve and represents is the pilot case of the BRIDGE project. The Monchique Fire Assessment Report prepared by the Independent Technical Observatory (Rego et al., 2019) indicated that in 2018, the District of Faro reported 711 outbreaks of forest fires, including the fire in the Serra de Monchique that resulted in a total burned area of 27,154 hectares and several environmental, material and personal damage in the region. According to the Municipal Forest Fire Defense Plan of Monchique 2016-2020 (PMDFCI), prepared by the Municipal Committee for the Forestry Fire Defense of Monchique (CMDFCI, 2012), the Serra de Monchique has extensive areas classified as ‘high’ and ‘very high’ danger of occurrence of new forest fires, especially the western portion of the municipality of Monchique and the southern part bordering the municipality of Portimão.
